Embracing AI in Education

I recently took on a new role as Chairperson of The Association of International Schools of India (TAISI). As Chairperson, I had the privilege of hosting some of the finest minds from the world of education at the 20th edition of the TAISI Conference held in Bangalore. The event featured some very exciting speakers from across the world and many new age topics were discussed. One agenda that stood out as a common theme with a lot of speakers was the emergence of generative tools from the world of AI and its potential to revolutionize teaching methodologies and redefine the educator’s role in the digital age.

I am reminded now of the many conversations and events I have attended during the Covid times when a question was being raised ‘Are teachers relevant’. With many moons past us, we all know the answer to this question now, and I for one was always clear on the fact that a teacher should not and will not be replaced in the ‘Idea of a School’.

While at the topic of relevance of a teacher, we need to deliberate on the advent of generative AI that has invaded our lives and is making ripples across industries. How does this impact the role of a teacher? The answer to this is also quite clear – teachers who don’t use AI will be replaced by teachers who use AI.

The need of the hour is for schools and educators to up their game and pick up the tools that the world of AI has to offer and include it in their daily lives to improve the quality of teaching and learning. There are innumerable tools out there that can transform the lives of teachers and make them more effective and reduce their time spent on repetitive tasks.

I am listing out a few tools that are relevant to our teachers today.

Content Creation Tools

  • ChatGPT and Bing Chat can assist teachers in explaining complex concepts, creating customised lesson plans and generating questions

  • Knewton Alta supports the creation of learning materials based on individual student needs

  • Canva Magic Design helps create visually appealing and creative class materials with minimal effort

  • DALL·E 3 and Midjourney create visuals for lessons or student presentations.

  • Pictory AI can turn written lessons into engaging video summaries.

  • Soundraw generates background music for presentations or school projects.

  • Suno.com is a great tool to create songs instantly on any topic.

Feedback Tools

  • Text Blaze is a brilliant tool that autogenerates feedback for students and creates templates for assignments

Grading & Assessment Tools

  • Quizizz/Quizlet AI generates interactive quizzes, flashcards, and gamified assessments.

  • Gradescope automates the grading of assignments, quizzes, and exams with detailed feedback.

  • ScribeSense has the ability to scan and grade handwritten and typed responses.

Collaboration Tools

  • Jamboard and Miro with AI Integrations facilitate real-time collaboration and brainstorming for students.

  • Pear Deck uses Google Slides and makes it interactive and tracks student engagement.

  • Classcraft helps gamify classroom management to improve behaviour and engagement.

By integrating AI into teaching, educators can reclaim time, spark creativity, and reignite their passion for learning. The future of education lies in blending the timeless value of teaching with the transformative power of technology. The idea of continuous professional development is not just to know more of the subject you teach but to rediscover the new ways of teaching and bringing the joy back in learning.
