From Desks to Deep Bonds: The Power of School Friendships

Celebrated on June 8 every year, National Best Friends’ Day is a reminder to cherish the special bond we share with some people. It is a day to appreciate and acknowledge a friends’ role for always being there for us. Friendships are a fundamental part of life. In the journey from being casual acquaintances to being lifelong companions, true friends stand with us during difficult times, motivate us to do better and make life enjoyable.  They shape us and our approach to the world. Celebrating this day reminds us to take a pause from our busy lives and value the loyal, kind and genuine people we call our best friends.

The Little Baby Steps

Childhood friendships are unique in their own way where conflicts happen fast and are forgotten faster, bonds are deepened through daily routines, similar pressures and common habits. For many children, having a best friend is their first experience of truly relating to someone outside their own family.

Schools play an integral role in shaping the personality and future of young students. They are not only places for academic learning but they are also centres for character development, discipline and social development. In the school, through peer-to-peer learning, sports, debates, music, art and a plethora of inclusive activities, an environment is created where friendships are treated with sensitivity rather than suspicion, which make a significant difference.

Safe-Spaces

A sense of belonging often begins with something as simple as one trusted friendship. For many, due to societal and economic reasons there is none. With time, such children may become quieter and more withdrawn, while others may overcompensate through attention-seeking behaviour. In many cases, what appears to be “behavioural issues” may actually be unmet emotional needs and a lack of relational safety. Such experiences can influence adult relationships and mental well-being. Therefore, a single relationship that gives them a sense of belonging can be the barrier between mental fatigue and total emotional isolation.

Role of Learning Spaces

As an educator, I believe school structures such as seating plans and class groups are important for classroom management and academic discipline. However, we must ensure these structures do not come at the cost of holistic development of children which goes beyond academics. Simple steps like collaborative learning, pairing students with different strengths and weaknesses, and avoiding comparison among children can make them feel secure and connected within their school environment.

Teachers also play an important role in building camaraderie among students. Classroom activities such as group discussions, team projects and collaborative learning help students learn teamwork, cooperation and mutual respect. Teachers can also guide students in resolving misunderstandings peacefully and encourage inclusive behaviour so that no child feels left out.

Technology & Familial Influence

Technology and social media have changed the way friendships are formed and maintained. While digital communication helps people stay connected, it also brings challenges such as cyberbullying, misunderstandings and social isolation. Therefore, it becomes essential for students to understand how to balance online interactions with real-life connections. True friendship is built on trust, understanding, support, and genuine care, not merely on social media likes or followers.

Parents too have a responsibility in nurturing healthy friendships among children. They should encourage their children to value honesty, kindness and respect in relationships. By teaching children to appreciate differences and treat others with compassion, parents help them become responsible and caring individuals. When children learn positive values at home and practise them at school, they contribute to a more harmonious environment.

A Bond to Celebrate

In conclusion, friendship is one of the most valuable gifts in life. It shapes character, builds confidence and provides emotional strength. Years later, children may not remember every lesson, theories or marks, but they will always cherish the memories of the school and the friendships they carried from it. So let this National Best Friend Day be an opportunity to celebrate not just one special friend but the spirit of friendship itself and pledge to make our schools places filled with kindness, respect, inclusion and support for all.
